Union Leader Editorial — Sununu Misstep: Debate Dodge Looks Bad

In Case You Missed It, a recent editorial from the Union Leader criticizes U.S. Senate candidate John Sununu for “declining” his Republican primary debate with Scott Brown, calling it a “misstep” that “looks bad.” 

The editorial notes that Sununu — who “hasn’t been in office since losing his attempt at reelection in 2008” — is giving his opponents “ammunition to charge that Sununu is trying to float on his family’s prominent name.”

• Former U.S. Sen. John Sununu has made a mistake by declining a scheduled TV debate with primary opponent and former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown.
• [...] His debate decision is not unprecedented. Heavy favorites sometimes think it better not to give an opponent any added public attention.
• But Sununu hasn’t been in office since losing his attempt at reelection in 2008. That’s quite a while in politics. A primary debate is a good way to knock off some of the rust acquired when one has not been competing for so long. Dodging a televised primary debate also gives Pappas ammunition to charge that Sununu is trying to float on his family’s prominent name.
• Besides, Granite Staters love their politics and proudly see New Hampshire as a proving ground. Participation is important, for candidates as well as voters.
