“Porch Candidate” Sununu is Relying on his Trump Endorsement to Carry Him

"Porch Candidate" Sununu is Relying on his Trump Endorsement to Carry Him

Jack Heath: “Maybe [Sununu] feels, with the Trump endorsement [...] that he can kind of lay low and go off name recognition.”

U.S. Senate candidate John Sununu is running a tired campaign propped up by Donald Trump’s endorsement and his family’s name recognition, according to Sununu’s Republican primary opponent Scott Brown during an interview with Pulse of New Hampshire radio host Jack Heath.

Last week, while talking on the Pulse of New Hampshire, Brown called Sununu a “porch candidate” and pointed out that he’s relying on voter confusion between him and his more charismatic brother, Chris. On Monday, Heath reaffirmed Brown’s assessment, observing that Sununu’s running a “less public” campaign, and with Trump’s endorsement in hand, Sununu is choosing to “lay low and go off name recognition.”

  • JACK HEATH: “John E. Sununu, Republican, seems to be running more of a, you know, maybe, a less public or less social media type campaign. Maybe he feels, with the Trump endorsement and the primary and the RNC backing, that he can kind of lay low and go off name recognition.”

  • SCOTT BROWN: “People are angry. They think they're running against Chris [Sununu], quite honestly. You've seen the recent posts and Bret Baier did it. Another one just came out by a group, you know, supporting John, but it was a picture of Chris. When I go and say, you know, ‘Listen, I'm running,’ you know, ‘Who are you running against?’ ‘I'm running against John Sununu.’ You know, ‘Oh, I love the governor.’ I said, ‘You love the dad? He's like 90.’ ‘No, no, Chris.’ ‘Well, no, Chris isn't running. It's John.’ They go, ‘Who's John?’ You know, they haven't seen him for 20 years, and so when we draw that distinction, they say, ‘No, no, no, I'm voting for you. I don't want someone who's basically, you know, supporting the World Economic Forum and you know making millions.’ Don't forget, he left the Senate what 850,000 — he's worth 36 million now. I mean, and that happens when you basically run off your old ties that you made in the Senate.”

  • BROWN:You know, people want someone to go out and work their tail off, and he's not. He's a porch candidate at this point. He's just sitting back in his porch.”
